"Journey" Could Be a Landmark Achievement for Gaming

Video games have come a long way since they first surfaced in the 80's. They have secured themselves as a staple of entertainment for every generation since that time and become a common part of the modern lifestyle all over the world. But every now and then, a video game comes along to push these established boundaries; to make us wonder whether games should be considered just an entertainment medium, or something more. One of these games is called...

Journey was released exclusively for the Playstation Network (and thus, the Playstation3) to be purchased and played via download in March 2012. But despite being just a Network title, the game has been so popular it has prompted a physical release, along with two other successful games created by thatgamecompany. That's not a typo, by the way; "thatgamecompany" is actually the developer of this game. And the name choice really reflects their unique approach to gaming with this title.
Journey is not like other video games of the current decade (heck, it may be unlike another video game, ever) and it does things differently than most of us are used to.  Journey is more akin to interactive artwork than interactive entertainment. I'm going to break it down to try to place what makes it that way.

A Journey needs no dialogue.

Journey is different in that there is absolutely no dialogue in the game to guide you or tell the  story. That means no voiceovers, no thought bubbles and no text. You might think, "Hey, then how does the darn game even convey a story at all?" Well, as a matter of fact, it still manages to have a pretty coherent plot. But the game uses its captivating visuals to create the danger, suspense, spirituality, and excitement that most games use dialogue to create.
The first thing to say about the visuals is that they are absolutely breathtaking. The game is set in a barren desert, so the player is usually surrounded by sand. The way this sand is animated, however, is nothing short of beautiful. It will sparkle in the sun, and it will ripple as you walk through it. It gives a very fluid, very natural sense to the character's movement that makes you feel like part of the world.
To expand on that, Journey very much uses visuals to explain to the player what sort of atmosphere the game is set in. They serve in this game, as I said, to be the dialogue; to tell you what is going on, like words usually would. It's very interesting to see how the visuals move the story forward, in lieu of traditonal text or voice work. For example, in the beginning of the game, the screen is covered by large hills and expanses of sand as far as the eye can see. There is little music being played, and the only sound is a serene wind sweeping around you. There is a sense of awe, as well as a sad calmness that can be sensed just by looking around, with tiny, ominous gravestones poking from the sand dunes.
I know at least I can tell that despite not even having any indication as to why the character is there, or what happened in the past to bring them there, I knew that whatever happened before the game's time, was bad. Things weren't cheerful, and the attention to detail in the visual landscape really drove that home for me.
There's a lot more to it than that, however. As the game moves forward, the scenery changes. One of the most iconic of the stages is the "Sunken City" level. In that level, your character is sliding through the sands towards the bottom of a ruined city in the desert. As you go, however, the music picks up in an exciting crescendo, and you find your character going through a remarkable circle of pillars, with the sinking sunlight lighting it up in a sparkling slide mingled with shadows. You keep sliding down the spiraling hill with greater and greater speed until finally, a vast pit appears in front of you. The music stops, and everything is black. And without spoiling, you know, as a player, that danger lurks in this giant, black cavern. That's what the visuals in this game do, and my words simply cannot do them justice. Perhaps that's the power they have found in letting the visuals set the tone of the story; they do what words just can't.

Skip to about 4:10 to see exactly what I'm talking about.

A Story Told by Music

A Journey needs no narration.

No doubt that besides noticing the stunning visuals in the video above, you also noticed how the music really added to the emotion of the scenery. If the visuals are the words of the dialogue, then the soundtrack for the game is best described as the voice used to speak them.
The soundtrack of Journey is considered such a masterpiece that the game was just recently nominated for the Grammy award for "best score soundtrack for visual media." It marks the first time a video game has ever received such an honor. And part of the reason why the game's soundtrack has made such an impact on the critical audience is that, like its visuals, the audio of Journey seeks to convey the atmosphere of the game instead of actual dialogue.
The score is composed of a full orchestra, with each piece based upon the events of the game. In the beginning, there is a calming, relaxing tone to the music, as things slowly get underway. Later, when things move faster--like in the sliding scene in the above video--the music quickens the pace as well. It gets loud at the most exciting moments, soft at the most ominous or calm. Without spoiling too much, I can say that the music punctuates beautiful visuals in the final stages of the game in such a way that I can never forget it. And neither will you, if you play it yourself.
The music isn't just there for the background, however. One of the game's main themes is the use of spiritual sounds to create paths as well as advance the plot. When you touch certain objects, they will light up and play music for as long as you're in contact with them. Even the bizarre creatures in the game each have whale-like calls that echo around your character. This is what makes moments of stark silence so impacting in the game, such as the cavern at the end of the above video, or later in the game when the character walks through snowy mountains. There is nothing to touch, nothing around, so music is shockingly absent from an otherwise musical game. The ways thatgamecompany matched key moments in the game with moments of sound is nothing short of masterful.

A Story that Enters the Heart

A Journey comes from within.

One of the most unique things about Journey is the way you can play it with others. The game will automatically match you with someone else who is playing at the same time as you, and you will move throughout the game together. You will never be able to communicate, and you will never know their name until the very end. But because of the intensity of some situations and what the visuals and music offer them, there will be moments where you feel close to this person.
By the end of the game, if you had traveled with the same companion since the beginning, you will feel as if you have shared something remarkable with them. The most powerful characteristic of Journey is that it can make you feel connected to a person this way. More so, it makes you feel connected to the actual character you control, on a quest through perilous landscapes, all to reach the light on top of the mountain.

Like poetry or a work of art, the game is aiming to draw an emotional response from the audience. It is not necessarily trying to tell a story with characters and a plot (though, through the above mentioned things, there are clues to what it may be). The storyline of Journey is something frequently debated, with most people seeing it as metaphorical for a spiritual journey of some kind. Some think it's a religious allegory. Some think it is a representation of how humanity may rise, fall, and then persevere in spirit in the aftermath of sin.
Whatever it is about, it clearly seems to hold a profound and deep meaning for those who question it critically. It always seems to be saying something from within the player, something emotional and something beautiful. To me, that sounds like a work of art, perhaps a musical masterpiece. Nobody knows exactly what it all means, but it captures something in our hearts.
That's what makes Journey a video game that goes beyond entertainment value. It is a window that can change the way we view the world, from within our own imaginations.

10 Best Foods for You (What You Should Be Eating)

What Makes a Food One of the "Best Foods for You"?

For a food to be considered healthy, it must contain some type of mineral, chemical, vitamin or molecule that helps protect and rebuild the cells in the body. There are a huge number of these compounds, but the following pack the most punch.

Fiber

Fiber is the "bulk" material found in plant matter. It is an indigestible carbohydrate that serves a critical function in the body. As it travels through the intestines, the fiber absorbs fat, cholesterol and toxins from the body. Fiber is also necessary to regulate the intestines. It has been shown that diet high in fiber will reduce sickness by properly (and quickly) flushing toxins from the body.

Fiber is arguably the most important part of your diet. It will help flush toxins out of your body and bolster your immune system.
Unsaturated Fats
These "good fats" have the ability to counteract the effects of "bad fats." They can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, help alleviate joint aches and pains and can help fight memory loss and dementia.
AntioxidantsAntioxidants are a molecule that prevents other molecules from oxidizing. When oxidation occurs within a cell, it can severely damage important structures like DNA. This reaction can also lead to the formation of cancer.

Vitamins and Minerals

Our bodies need a constant supply of vitamins and minerals to properly function. These compounds are used for a variety of functions throughout the body such as the conversion of food to energy or the reparation of bones. Foods containing a wide range of vitamins and minerals are regarded as extremely important for healthy living.

Probiotic Bacteria

This helpful bacteria resides within the colon and plays an important part in the digestive process. They help prevent the formation of pathogens and toxins and keep the colon regulated. Evidence has also shown that it can help reduce cholesterol. In particular people with digestive issues (IBS and colitis) will benefit the most from probiotic sources.

The List of the 10 Best Foods for You

10. Greek Style Yogurt
Greek style yogurt (plain, 0% fat) is a thicker, creamier version of yogurt. It contains all the benefits of regular yogurt - probiotic bacteria, and calcium, but also has 50% more protein and 50% less sugar.

The Best Way to Travel What to Expect as a First Time Flyer

5 tips for the First Time Flyer

Traveling has become easier than ever before. People own personal vehicles that can transport them hundreds of miles at a time. We have buses, trains and subways that allow for long distance travel at reasonable prices. However, the ultimate machine used for travel in modern society is the airplane. Flying is the fastest means of transportation known to human civilization.
Boeing estimates more than 4 million passengers fly on commercial airline jets every day across the world. Flying is a very safe form of transportation and it is more likely to die in a car accident than from flight. That being said, first time flyers need not worry because they are in safe hands.
Keeping this in mind, we are ready to plan out our trip to the airport. There are 5 tips that are important to put into consideration when planning a flight. It will make the trip much more enjoyable as well as keep you safe.
Tip # 1: Plan ahead
People reading this article have already started the first step in planning that trip. USA Today[5846] recommends booking flight tickets 3 weeks in advanced depending on the destination. Buying tickets early is usually the best option as many travel agencies will reimburse money if the flight becomes cheaper at a later date. Always arrive at the airport at least an hour early because there are many variables that can cause people to miss their flights such as traffic, accidents, unexpected hold ups in security, problems with ticket processing and things along that nature.
Tip # 2: Know what items are prohibited
Airports have become stricter than ever mainly due to the breach in security during 9/11. Try not to be rude or hate the airport security officers because their job is only to keep people safe. Understand that they have a difficult job, especially when people treat them so poorly ever day. Being kind can also speed up the process through the security gates. Understand that some products are not allowed past these checkpoints because they can be disguised as harmful products or lethal weapons. It can be surprising what can’t be taken through because they can be things like drinks larger than 3 ounces, bottles of shampoo or even tubes of toothpaste. A detailed list of prohibited items can be found at the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) website[5847]

Tip # 3: Packing luggage
Heavy luggage can be cumbersome and hard to carry at airports. It also costs more money to check luggage into the plane. This is why it is best to only bring the things that are necessary for the trip and pack as light as possible. People are normally allowed 2 carry on items on the plane. One suitcase or bag will go in the storage units above the seats. The other can remain with you on the floor under the seats. Any additional luggage will have to be paid for and checked in. Something that can save bag space is rolling clothes up tightly instead of folding them. More items will be able to fit this way.

Tip # 4: Buying things at the airport.
Try not to do it. The stores in airports price items at a much higher cost than they would normally go for. This is not entirely their fault because the operating costs of these shops are simply much higher because of the location. The store owners also keep in mind that they are the only choice consumers have when at the airport. Something else to keep in mind is the cost of parking. Always try to get a ride to the airport instead of driving there yourself because parking fees are tremendous.

Tip # 5: Carry extra cash for emergencies
There can always be surprises waiting at the airport. When a card suddenly stops working, having extra cash on hand can help greatly. There is high traffic and security at airports so it is unlikely for people to get robbed. However, this can be a disadvantage for people who do not keep an eye on their belongings and purse or wallet, but awareness of one’s surrounding can protect against this. Another thing to keep in mind is that flights are often cancelled due to safety reasons or backed up flights. People who do not have extra money on hand or a credit/debit card to rent a hotel room can be stranded at the airport for days.
Anyone following these simple tips should have a great experience as a first time flyer. Keep these things in mind and be aware of changing flight schedules as well as different time zone changes. The airport always operates at the current local time. Normally the flight attendant will announce the local time upon landing. Above all, enjoy your journey and be safe.

How to Invest in Gold Without Actually Buying It

Buying Gold for Cheap

Are you wondering how to buy gold and invest in gold without actually having to buy physical gold? Gold has had a huge run in price since the year 2000, exploding from around $300 an ounce to around current prices of $1,700 an ounce. While many people including myself believe that gold still has plenty of upside and will eventually reach $5,000 an ounce or more, it can be hard for the average Joe to get invested in physical gold, known as gold bullion. This complicates things but there are ways to get around this. You don't have to miss out on the greatest bull market of our time - there are easier ways to get invested in the gold market!
Why Has the Price of Gold Risen So Much?
This is a common question I get from people not too familiar with the fundamentals of the gold market. Basically, gold is a barometer that measures the strength of fiat currencies such as the dollar. Confused? Don't worry! Let me explain further. This is crucial to understand.
What is a Fiat Currency? A "fiat" or paper currency is money that isn't backed by anything, other than the full faith and credit of the government that issues it. Every currency in the world today is Fiat - the US Dollar, the Canadian Dollar, the Yuan, the Euro, the Japanese Yen, etc.
Why Have Currencies Been Losing Their Value? - A big reason to own gold is because when curriences such as the dollar lose their value, due to excessive money printing by the central banks, gold tends to rise in price.
It does this because people fear inflation and losing the purchasing power of their money - which happens when central banks print money.
So, Why Are Central Banks Printing Money if They Know it Will Devalue the Currencies and Cause Inflation? Because they must do it and they have no other option.

Why Central Banks Such as the Federal Reserve Are Printing Money
What is Quatitative Easing? To put it simply, it is printing money. Ben Bernanke said with QE3 that the Fed will engage in monthly rounds of QE, supplying a minimum of $40 billion a month in purchases of mortgage-back securities. This money does not come from a bank or savings that the federal reserve has accrued - it comes out of thin air! That's why people say they are printing money. While they are not physically printing it, it is being electronically created.
If the Federal Reserve is printing so much money, why haven't prices risen? Why is Ben Bernanke printing money?
These actions haven't caused big inflation - yet. But many people, myself included, think it will. And some argue that it already has. Gas prices are over $4 a gallon in some places, and food prices are risen quick. The government tends to underreport inflation in the Consumer Price Index for a number of reasons. They say inflation is currently only around 2 percent, but independent analysts such as Shadow Stats have said that the real rate of inflation is more like 6-7 percent, currently.
How Much Upside Does the Price of Gold Have?
Another way to ask this question is, "how much money will central banks print?" The answer is, a lot, to both questions. The western world is faced with a tremendous amount of debt - the United States national debt is currently over 16 trillion and growing every day. By 2016, at current paces, this number will increase to over $20 trillion! And I am very pessimistic that the US government will get things done to fix the debt problem. Many believe we could even see a hyperfinaltion in the United States if the Federal Reserve continues to print money.
Can gold reach $10,000 an ounce? I really do think so. Remember, the gold price is a function of how much currency has been created. So when you see a chart of the money supply in the United States, as it increases, the price of gold tends to increase. The federal reserve needs to keep increasing the money supply and keep interest rates low to prevent another 2008 financial collapse.
*Price targets for gold this decade*
*Gold price target for 2013 - $2,250 - $2,500.
*Gold price target for 2013 - $3,000
*Gold price target for 2014 - $4,000 - $5,000+
*Gold price target for 2015, 2016  - $5,000 - $10,000
How Can I Invest in Gold Without Having to Buy it?
So, like I said above, there are many ways for the average Joe to get exposure to gold without actually having to buy it. Here are a couple of ideas.
1) Buy a Gold Exchange Traded Fund  - The most popular choice I know of is the GLD - SPDR Gold Trust. Actions that will debase the dollar such as QE3 will give this ETF more upside. It is designed to track the price of gold. Instead of buying a physical gold coin for $1,700, you can buy a share of this fund for $170.
You can also buy the GDX, which is the Gold Miners ETF, or the GDJX, which is the junior gold miners ETF. These ETFs hold shares of dozens of companies around the world that mine gold. Both of these have a ton of upside but carry a little more risk since they are miners. Gold mining company risks include rising costs and the potential nationalization of mines. Nevertheless, I am very bullish on the gold mining stocks. Which leads me to my next way to invest in gold without having to actually buy it:
2) Buy Gold Mining Stocks - Check out large cap gold stocks such as Goldcorp (Quote: GG), Newmont Mining (NEM) which pay a pretty decent dividend and could outperform gold as it moves to $5,000 an ounce.
3) Buy Gold Royalty Company Stocks - Another way to buy gold is to buy the royalty companies. These are NOT mining companies, rather they are financers for the mining companies. They give miners some money upfront to build a mine and then get a portion of the gold produced for a fixed price for the life of the mine.
These companies are cash-flow machines - they are very profitable because of the fixed-price business model. Companies such as Franco Nevada (FNV) or Sandstorm Gold (SAND) pay $500 an ounce and less for the gold the miners produce. With inflation comes rising costs to build and produce gold, which affects the mining stocks but does not affect on these royalty companies. So they offer all of the upside of gold but none of the risk associated with the mining companies.
I hope you enjoyed this article on how to invest in gold without actually buying it - there are many ways to invest in gold and its important to know the differences!

Top 5 Biggest Advances in Transportation Technology

#5: The Boeing 787

Sure, it's big.  Sure, it uses a bazillion gallons of fuel just getting warmed up.  But it's beautiful.  And it landed the #5 spot on my list because I envision a future where we just teleport to places, no fossil fuels necessary.

I've always been fascinated by flight, and the latest iteration of the passenger experience is no exception. It was redesigned with larger windows and a taller interior for better comfort and passenger experience.  The latest jumbo jet from manufacturer Boeing actually uses 20% less fuel, partly due to improved aerodynamics and partly due to advances in materials.  It's also 40% cheaper to maintain, largely due to the corrosion-resistant properties of the 23 tons of carbon fiber in the fuselage, the same material that makes up a majority of today's high-quality road bicycles and components.

#4: The Symbionic Leg

Included for its improvements in personal transportation, which I'm a big proponent of, this bionic leg from Ossur provides what the company calls
"the world's first true bionic prosthetic leg"
Loaded with sensors and an advanced microprocessor help it adjust to the wearer's stride and pace, which results in advanced stability, lowered user strain, and fewer trips and falls.  The user can adjust the heel height to accommodate for different shoes and it automatically calibrates to inclines and declines, helping the wearer move up and down ramps.  According to the company's website, users report an astounding 86% increase in Daily Living Activities and, perhaps even more incredible, a report from wearers indicated an 80% decrease in mental fatigue.  Sounds like Ossur is on the right path with their Symbionic Leg.
Ossur's device was also featured in the May 2012 issue of Popular Mechanics.

#3: 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid

Ford has really advanced the bar with the 2013 model edition of their latest winner, the Fusion Hybrid.  Part Aston Martin (check out that grill) and part family sedan, this is a sporty ride that everyone can enjoy.

Gas guzzlers beware: The Hybrid Fusion sips an impressive 47 mpg both city and highway, according to the company's website.  It uses their EcoBoost engine to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, improving fuel economy from a respectable 22 city/34 hwy mpg in its standard gasoline edition.
Available with a six-speed paddle-shift manual transmission, you can improve your personal fuel economy even better.  If you don't know how driving a manual transmission vehicle can save you gas money, look into it.  And if you just don't know how to drive a car with a manual transmission, Ford's made it easy with their paddle shifters, little buttons right on the steering wheel, for computer-controlled shifting that can't be beat by the best racetrack runners.
With safety features that will keep the most harried and reckless drivers wrapped up in a blanket, the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid takes the #3 spot on my list of advances in transportation technology.

#2: Fisker Karma

A Beautiful Electric Car For the Masses

This plug-in electric car also sports a rooftop made from solar panels and a sustainably sourced interior, including trim made from salvaged wood.  The beauty of this car lies not only in its fuel efficiency, its 403 horsepower, its 959 foot-lbs at the rear wheels, or its stunning design.  No, the true beauty of the Fisker Karma is that if we all drove one, for all our trips under 50 miles (which is its current electric range), we could literally save billions of dollars in fuel and maintenance costs for our vehicles.  And we'd look pretty freakin' sweet doing it, too.

At just over $100,000 retail price tag, here's how to tell if you could make it work for your budget:
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics state that "U.S. daily travel averages 11 billion miles a day — almost 40 miles per person per day".  [5240]   If you are an average driver, driving no more than 40 miles per day, your Fisker Karma would never need gas.

Considering that the most recent fuel economy data for vehicles sold in the United States in 2011 was 33.8 mpg and that the average American driver logs about 12,000 miles per year, you would be saving over $1400 per year in gas alone (at $4/ gallon).  If you change your oil every 3,000 miles or every 3 months, you'd be saving another couple hundred bucks, too, unless you get the early bird specials, of course.  That adds up to automatic savings of $1,600, right off the showroom floor.
Now, this alone won't make the payments for you, but a hundred bucks in your pocket each month is a surefire way to have some more fun while doing your part to reduce emissions and save the planet.  Go you.

#1: The Faraday Bike

The team at Ideo lost a key member recently when he left to build a company around one of their projects, the Faraday Bike.  The Faraday Bike was the result of a design competition by Oregon Manifest, with aims to show that "bikes can make the world a better place."

Winning design components include sustainably-harvested bamboo fenders that keep the rider from splashes and kicked-up mud and dirt when riding around town, a quick-release front rack mechanism that allows users to easily change the front cargo piece, integrated high-power front and rear lights, and a motor that seamlessly kicks in when riders ride uphill.  All these components were designed with the future in mind, a future in which millions of people ride bicycles for a majority of their transportation needs, but don't necessarily consider themselves 'cyclists.'
The Faraday Bike earned the #1 spot because it alone can reduce traffic congestion and our nation's dependence on fossil fuels while simultaneously cleaning the air and improving the lives of millions of people.  Yay, bikes!

Leap Motion - The Keyboard and Mouse of Tomorrow

Today is slowly becoming more and more about touch screen technology. First with smart phones, then tablets, now with Windows 8 computers are getting ready to step onto the market. However, a touch screen monitor costs upwards of $200 dollars. There is a cheaper option coming to you soon though!
The Leap is a small USB peripheral that senses the unique motions of your finger tips and enacts them on the screen. This means you have touch screen technology right on your finger tips without actually touching your screen. No cleaning the smudges off your computer screen and no spending $200+ dollars for the technology.
The Leap is not on the market until February 2013, but are currently accepting pre-orders. This technology will only cost you the affordable price of $70.
It is essentially the size of a little flash drive, all you have to do is plug in your USB adaptor and place in in front of your computer screen.
I imagine it will not have the ease of use that touch screens have, though. It sounds to me that there may be a little bit of programming on the users end. However, a lot of developers are working on things where you can just start up and have it ready to go. Also, I imagine once it launches there will be a variety of macros you can use to get your desired appearance.
I foresee the only downfall of this being that it will not have a user friendly hand motion editing interface. It would be really cool if it just captured what motion your hand was making during the desired effect and just saved it, but I doubt it would be that simple.

What Does It Do?

The Leap can do anything your fingers can. From navigating the Windows 8 navigation, to drawing in any 3D modelling software, to gaming! You name it, there are developers working on it right now.
leap finger sense
The Leap uses over 200 mapped points on your fingers and you can control just about any thing with the movements of your hand. The above picture shows you just how much it recognizes your hands. Everything you see above it a point of recognition. It recognizes the difference between your thumbs and fingers and can even recognize a pencil. This makes the Leap the absolutely most advanced motion capture technology available to the general public.
If you think the XBox 360's Kinect was cool, but a bit clunky, you will probably love this. It makes every thing look so smooth.
Try as I might, I have not yet used The Leap, but their promo video below really says it all.
The Leap literally puts information at the tips of your fingers. They have sort of the unofficial tagline of being "as accurate and reliable as a mouse and keyboard and more sensitive than a touch screen."
You can edit the technology so that it will fit the unique gestures of your hand with macros. I asked the person that showed this to me if I could flip my computer the bird and have it shut off, he said you probably could with the appropriate macros.
This means you could reach into a of our solar system and turn it like you had our little bit of the universe right at your hands. It also means you can load up the latest Call of Duty and actually hold and fire your gun.
You can also link a few Leaps together and use them across a wide screen. This gives me the image of a bunch of chemists using hands free technology on a giant chalk board made out of a large computer screen.
It really makes me geek out a bit.
The Leap also brags of it's possible uses in the medical field. Making it so that a surgeon can flip through advanced medical guides during surgery without ever having to take off their gloves!
The idea for the Leap can from the idea of creating 3D models. The creators of the Leap Motion technology thought that you should be able to mold clay on a screen as you molded clay in real life. That is an idea I can really get on board with.
Personally, I will have one. This I imagine in what it seemed like when the mouse and keyboard were first created, computers even. Some invention that seemed a little weird, but became the biggest thing all over the world.

How Does It Work?

This is the big mystery. The developers of the Leap Motion technology have kept their secret just that--A secret. I can see way, I am sure there are more than a few big corporations that would love to just jack their idea right from beneath them.
A few speculators believe that the Leap works in similar ways to the Theremin, the instrument that uses the motion of ones hands to control the pitch and sound of the instrument. Theremin's use an electromagnetic field created by radio waves, people speculate that the Leap uses something similar.
I am sure we will find out the deep dark secret once this has been on the market for awhile.
If you are a developer, Leap Motion technology is giving away lots of free developer kits just to see what you can come up with. I would also like to see what people come up with, so developers, do not be shy!
For the people who are not developers, you can head on down to that link above and submit any cool ideas you have for people in the forums. There are really quite a few neat ones there already like massively multiplayer online roleplaying game controls and sign language dictation.
There is even a little idea of creating a virtual keyboard that looks very much like a real keyboard and you type on it like you would a real key board. That is perhaps the most science fiction thing I have heard all year!

The building itself is set in the picturesque heart of the San Antonio. Centuries old, this traditional Spanish mission is a touchstone for both Texans, their Spanish predecessors in the regionand anyone else who values liberty, freedom and self-determination.

Though their parents may be a little confused, every school kid in Texas, from the remote western reaches of El Paso through the Fifth Ward ghettoes of Houston to the cosmopolitan suburbs of Dallas, knows that the finest water park in world is located at Schlitterbahn near San Antonio.
The Schlitterbahn or “Slippery Road” is a huge attraction for anyone interested in getting wet and wild in the Texas summer sun. For the Hopeless Romantics - The Downtown Riverwalk

Time was, there was very little for a couple to do in San Antonio except take a walk down by the river. In such a case, a man would be dependent on his own personality and wit to charm the young lady of his dreams. Luckily, for everyone involved, those days are over. San Antonio now boasts one of the most exciting and romantic travel destinations in all of Texas, the Riverwalk.
For those who have never been to the River City, the Riverwalk is a man-made palisade constructed along both banks of the San Antonio River that wends through the heart of the downtown area.
The pedestrian walkway, itself, is just above the level of the river and there are any number of bistros, shops and restaurants located just steps away from the river. The entire walk is an outdoor festival that encompasses many of San Antonio’s festivals and cultural events. Access points are located throughout the city. The atmosphere is truly remarkable as it can be as romantic or exciting as you choose. There are even leisurely boat cruises throughout the day and evening that will satisfy the curiosity of children or couples.

For the Outdoor Lovers - The Hill Country

Despite its growing cosmopolitan image, not everything in San Antonio revolves around its urban setting and lifestyle. Indeed, the city is a gateway to one of the most beautiful sections of its state, the Texas Hill Country.
A rolling landscape that goes on forever, a diverse cultural climate and the ever present, welcoming hospitality of the Lone Star State define the hill country. Take a drive northeast from San Antonio and you will find antiques, craft fairs and some of the most exciting cultural events anywhere in the United States.
In particular, the area has several state parks including Abilene State Park and Palo Duro Canyon where one can camp, hike, climb and swim. They are, indeed, some of the most beautiful spots on the planet. Otherwise, try tubing down the Guadalupe River or go spelunking – that’s cave exploring to you and me - or just camp out below the skies that are big and bright. Y’all can’t go wrong by enjoying the wide open spaces and the magnificent hospitality when you are deep in the heart of Texas.
For more refined tastes, the Hill Country is also boasts a thriving Texas wine industry with a formidable array of award winning vintages. There are over 30 wineries to visit and hundreds of wines to choose from. Don’t decide, try them all. Some of the best places to visit to sample the local viniculture are Wimberley Valley Winery, the Santa Maria Cellars and the Flat Creek Estate.

It is now a preeminent vacation choice for tourists from Central and South America as well as the rest of the United States. In many cases, these visitors will actually forego a trip to Europe or Asia for the pleasures and excitement of a trip to San Antonio. None of them ever regret the decision.

10 Tips on Visiting a Museum

How to prepare your visit

1. Google your interest plus the word museum

Museums usually specialize in a particular subject. Some museums have a broad view on their specialization (Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Dutch art from the 15th unto the 19th century), others are very specialized (Local History Museum of Paulus van Daesdonck, Ulvenhout, the Netherlands). You probably already know museums for your specific interest, but Google might surprise you. Just search your preference plus the word ‘museum’.

2. What would you like to see?

Aside from a specific interest, there are general preferences. Some people love abstract, others are more into figurative work. One prefers two-dimensional, the other rather sees three-dimensional work. Again, googling a word plus the word ‘museum’ yields a wealth of information.

3. On your way

Check in advance on the website what the current exhibition is. And (here’s a tip out of experience!) check whether the museum is open on the day that you want to go. (Sometimes I am standing in front of a closed door, because I’ve failed to do just that. Especially when I am abroad.) What is the entrance fee, is there a surcharge for temporary exhibitions, will there be a museum cafĂ© or a restaurant?

4. Choose

If you visit a big museum, you better pick just a couple of rooms instead of seeing everything. Or if the museum has put a lot on display (like museums for antiquities often have a tendency to), choose a few things that you really like or think that are interesting, and pretend you do not see the rest.

5. If you visit with children

It is a good idea to see if there is a special tour for children. For instance a treasure hunt. Look for accompanying signs that children can read at their own height.

In the museum

6. Have an open mind

We are so accustomed to see many images that we unconsciously skip a lot. As a result you do not take everything in. Ask yourself what an artist was thinking when he/she created the work.

7. Take regular breaks

Prevent yourself from walking thoughtlessly through the museum.Walking around too long is quite tiring. You better take a break and have a drink or sit on a bench somewhere to rest.

8. Keep in mind in what time a work was made

And I do not mean how long someone was working on it, but in what year and what culture the artist lived when he or she created the work. Personally, I am always amazed that the abstract works of Piet Mondriaan with his primary colors were constructed in a time when most homes looked like that of my grandmother. With piles of dark wood furniture and a lot of frills.

9. Together

To go with a friend is extra fun if you ask each other questions about the work. What do you see in this? What do you think the purpose of the artist was? What do you think of the use of color?

10. Do not be fooled

You do not need to be an accomplished art critic to walk around in a museum. Never mind the idea that your knowledge is insufficient or of people acting as if they know it all. Even as a “layman” you can enjoy what you see. Or not, to your own liking.

Panda's "2" Easy Waffles

Quick And Easy Waffles With An Easy To Remember Recipe

As someone who loves to cook and bake, learning to make waffles was a must for me.  After playing with the idea several times I made a recipe that is quick and easy, uses few dishes, is easy to remember, and is easy to change-up for a little variety.  Since sharing is most of the fun is cooking I am sharing my recipe with you here today.  I call these waffles "2" easy because they are indeed too easy to make and too easy to remember the recipe for.  The number 2 is very central to the recipe.  You will use 2 eggs, 2 cups, 2 spoons, or 1/2 of something.  The number 2 is in almost all the measurements for the ingredients.  You will see what I mean.

Ingredients:

2 Cups of flour
2 Tablespoons of sugar
1 Tablespoon of baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
2 Cups of milk
2 Eggs
1/2 Cup of vegetable oil or melted butter
2 teaspoons of vanilla

Before We Begin

I will let you know that I always use a Belgian waffle maker for my waffles.  I have never tried   it with any other style of waffle maker.  I see no reason, however, that it would not work with any waffle maker. I highly recommend getting a Belgian waffle maker though.  All of the ones that I have ever seen are of good quality.  They tend to leak less batter during cooking.  They also tend to cook more evenly than others.  Plus I like the way that they taste much better.

The Process

Step one is to get out your waffle maker and plug it in so that it starts to heat up.  Then in a large mixing bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.  Use a fork to stir your dry ingredients and form a well in the center of your bowl.  Set this aside for now.  Crack your eggs into a medium mixing bowl and lightly beat them.  To this add your milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla.  Stir together all of these items until well mixed and it is difficult to see that there is oil in the bowl.  When done, add all the liquid mixture at once to your dry ingredients.  Stir the mixture until moistened.  Give your waffle makers cooking surfaces a quick shot of cooking spray.  Measure out enough or your batter to make a waffle and pour it over the surface of your waffle maker and close the lid.  How much batter you will need for this will be dependent on your brand and type of waffle maker.  Mine is about 1/2 of a cup.  You can usually get about 8 - 10 waffles from this recipe.  Now all you do is get a plate ready and wait.
Unless you have a bunch of people who you are cooking for you are likely to end up with some extra batter.  That it fine.  Put it in an air tight plastic container in the refrigerator for 2 - 3 days.  When you are ready to use it just pull it out.  It will likely have started to separate.  All you need to do is add 1 more teaspoon of baking powder and mix the batter until it is all combined once again and it will cook just like the first time.

The Very Best Part

The best and most delicious part of making waffles is topping them.  The options available to you are almost endless.  Stopped only by the confines of your imagination.  Well that and what ever you are comfortable putting in your stomach.  Here are a few of my favorite ways to top waffles.  In my family growing up the standard was butter and syrup.  I like to spread peanut butter or Nutella on mine and smother it in syrup.  Syrup of any kind is great and adding fresh fruit and whip cream is something that everyone needs to try at least once.  Really this step is up to you so have some fun with it!

Make It Differently Tomorrow

While waffles are an amazing breakfast food, anything that you consume too frequently you will get bored with eventually.  To keep that from happening try putting some variation on the recipe.  Here are a couple of ways that I like to keep things interesting.
Whole Wheat Waffles:
Make the waffle batter as described above but replace a portion of the flour with some form of whole wheat.  I usually mix the flour half and half.  That is half regular flour and half whole wheat flour.  You can also try using a mix of flour and oatmeal.  I have not done it this way so I don't know what ratio to use, but I do know several people who have done this with delicious results.
Buttermilk Waffles:
Buttermilk waffles are a great treat and just as easy to make.  Start by reducing the baking powder to 1 teaspoon and add 1 teaspoon of baking soda.  Then just substitute 2 cups of buttermilk for the milk.
Tip:  Since buttermilk is rather expensive you may not just have it lying around.  That is not a problem at all.  In fact I recommend using sour milk instead.  It will cost you much less and you don't have to keep it on hand.  You just make what you need and use it.  No leftovers to deal with that way.  So here is how you make it.  Before you start your recipe, this one or any other calling for buttermilk or sour milk, measure out milk in the amount that you need and add to it 1 Tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice for each cup of milk.  I think that vinegar gives a better flavor and is a little more effective.  Just give it a quick stir and set it aside for a few minutes.  I just start my recipe and it is usually done by the time I get to adding the milk.

Enjoy your waffles! Let me know of any variations that you find and want to share

The schoolboy, 8, who has struck up a remarkable friendship with a colony of alpine animals

The marmots and me: The schoolboy, 8, who has struck up a remarkable friendship with a colony of alpine animals

They are notoriously shy around humans, beating their tails and chattering their teeth to try to warn us off before emitting loud whistles to tell other members of their colony to flee.
But when these alpine marmots see Matteo Walch, they scuttle to his side and show him nothing but affection.
The eight-year-old built up a remarkable relationship with the creatures since first being taken to see them by his nature-loving family four years ago.
